Description

The Mississippi Silver cowpea(also known as Mississippi Silver Hull or Brown Crowder) is a popular, heat-tolerant heirloom variety bred by Mississippi State University in 1965.

Plant Characteristics
Growth Habit:

  • Low, bushy plant with short runners (climbing bush) that sets pods above the foliage for easy picking.
    Pods:
  • Silvery pale green pods, 6 to 8 inches long, occasionally streaked with light rose.
    Peas:
  • Large, crowded, kidney-shaped brown cowpeas with a rich, meaty taste and smooth skin.
    Days to Maturity:
  • 64 to 85 days depending on climate and growing conditions.
    Growing Guide
Climate:

  • Thrives in hot, humid weather and tolerates drought well.
    Soil:
  • Adapts well to poor soils, preferring well-drained, loamy conditions; avoid excessive nitrogen which causes leaf overgrowth instead of pods.
    Planting:
  • Sow seeds 1 to 2 inches deep, spaced 2 to 4 inches apart in full sun after the danger of frost has passed.
    Disease Resistance:
  • Shows strong resistance to fusarium wilt and root-knot nematodes.
    Culinary Uses
    Preparation:
  • Can be boiled fresh, frozen, canned, or dried.
    Flavor:
  • Offers a hearty texture and rich flavor similar to black-eyed peas, but with a thinner skin and slightly greener taste when fresh.
